Our extended degree in mechanical engineering starts with a foundation year to prepare you for degree-level study. After your first year, you study the modules from our three-year course.

The degree covers areas such as structural mechanics, electrical circuits, fluids and powder dynamics, and thermodynamics. At the end of the course, you should be equipped for a career as a professional mechanical engineer in areas such as high-value manufacturing and the automotive and aerospace industries.

The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, indicating that this degree provides ideal preparation for aspiring professional engineers.

Entry requirements

If you are 

Typical offer: 64 Points

Qualifications: three A-levels / Extended Diploma / combination of A-level and Diploma / A-levels and Extended Certificate

Subjects:

  • A-level: 16 Points from mathematics, a physical science or a numerate subject. General Studies/Level 3 Key Skills not accepted.
  • BTEC National: Extended Diploma in Engineering (required: Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems (Unit 7) and Further Engineering Mathematics (Unit 8), both at Pass) or related subject.
  • A-level and BTEC National: Diploma/Extended Certificate in Engineering and 16 Points from A-level mathematics if Units 7 and/or 8 are not included.
  • A-level and BTEC National: Diploma/Extended Certificate in Applied Science and 16 Points from A-level mathematics.
  • Plus GCSEs in English language, mathematics, and one science subject at grade C / 4 or above. We also accept equivalent qualifications at Level 2, such as Functional Skills in mathematics and English.

We will also consider:

  • AS-levels along with A2-levels
  • Alternative qualifications at Level 3, such as OCR Cambridge Technicals, AQA Tech-level, the International Baccalaureate and Access to Engineering
  • Appropriate qualifications such as an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree, with which you may be able to enter this degree in Year 2.
