Foundation Paramedic Science – Coventry University

Successful completion of the course ensures that you achieve the required standards so that you are eligible to submit for HCPC paramedic registration.

Half of your course will be spent establishing a sound academic base to work from within the University. You will also undertake a compulsory practice placement where you will be treating real patients and working alongside registered Paramedics and health care professionals.

During your time at the University, we will concentrate on a number of core themes. We have the opportunity to learn about the communication and professionalism skills required of a Paramedic, while developing a sound underpinning knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology and pharmacology, along with necessary clinical skills.

All of this will be supported by evidence-informed practice and proven clinical decision-making tools. We will cover all of these themes over the full two-year course, with in-depth focus on the academic and clinical practice needed to meet HCPC registration.

Why choose this course

You will have the opportunity to learn from an academic Paramedic team with a wide range of clinical knowledge and expertise. This includes specialist experience of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and the Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP) role. The team have also made contributions to conferences, books and journals relating to paramedicine, and are undertaking research in key areas of pre-hospital care.

As this course has been validated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), on completion you can apply to register as a Paramedic. This is a legal requirement to be able to call yourself a Paramedic and essential for employment in this role.

Another benefit of studying this course is our long-standing collaboration with the West Midlands Ambulance Service, who provide you with placement provision and mentorship. Exposure to the clinical environment within a NHS Ambulance Trust will prove valuable when you are applying for a position as a registered Paramedic.

During your training at Coventry University, you will have the benefit of using state-of-the art simulation facilities in our new purpose-built Alison Gingell Building. Including the use of a fully-fitted simulated ambulance, hospital facilities such as wards and operating theatres, simulated houses within which to practice life-like patient simulations and the use of high-tech mannequins to consolidate your practical and theoretical skills.

Once you’ve successfully finished this course you can apply to register as a Paramedic on the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which is a legal requirement for all those looking to practice.

The University’s Careers and Employability team provide a wide range of support services to help you plan and prepare for your career. The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences’ own Employability and Placements Unit can help you to find suitable work placements and give you advice on how to get the most out of them.

For those looking to continue their academic career, opportunities are available at Coventry for progression to a full BSc (Honours). Completion of this “top up” degree can be done at your own pace while in full-time employment. This can lead onwards to Masters, MPhil and PhD if you wish.
